Tips on how to find a good IB economics IA article

Is this your first time doing an Economics IA? Knowing where to start can save you lots of time and effort in your research. While finding an article may sound simple, it might get you panicking if you are not sure where and what to look for. In this post, we get to look at some of the vital tips to help look for an IB economics article.

Narrow down your search

One of the common mistakes IB students make is searching for articles randomly. It is possible to find articles but relating them to your economic key concept may be way harder. Instead of picking your topic, for instance, subsidies, taxes, etc., choose your key concept and search for an article that fits in with your ideas. This is a well-guided search that is more likely to yield fruits.

Ensure your article has the solution

Avoid forcing your key concepts to fit in with the article. It might be problematic if an article does not propose a certain solution. Instead, embrace articles with solutions that are in harmony with your key concepts. This will help you avoid going overboard to explain solutions to the examiner. Similarly, it ensures you will not likely use more than one key concept in your paper.

Avoid articles that explain everything in detail

Using detailed articles puts you at a disadvantage, as your economic IA commentary may look too simple and copied. For instance, if an article dwelling on intervention as a key concept gives a solution, such as a state introducing fiscal policy change to lower inflation and goes ahead to give advantages and disadvantages, your analysis may look shallow. Instead, look for articles that provide shallow proposals that ensure you have room to analyze the article without looking like you paraphrased the original article in your commentary.

Use free resources to search for an ideal economic IA article

There are numerous free resources to help you find the best article for your economic IA analysis, as listed below

  • Google News
  • The conversation
  • Wallstreet journal
  • New York Times
  • CBN
  • The GuardIAn
  • Reuters
  • FinancIAl times
  • The Economist

One of the easiest tricks to find relevant articles is to include topics in your searches. For instance, including the word “subsidies” as you search for articles under Google News ensures you get relevant articles from the site.

Choose your article based on the three categories of economic IA

Economics IA is divided into three main categories: microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economy or Global economy. One can find articles based on the following;

  • Examples of macroeconomics articles. These articles can be based on
  1. Supply-side policies/ fiscal policies
  2. Inflation, Monetary policies/ interest rates
  3. Employment/ wages
  • Examples of microeconomics articles. These articles can have topics such as;
  1. Market failure is one of the best topics and can easily be assocIAted with products such as vapes, alcohol, cigarettes, fatty foods, sweetened beverages, etc.
  • Examples of International economics or global economics articles can include;
  1. Sometimes, finding articles on global economy is a challenge. This is because countries do not often form trade blocks or reform their current exchange rate systems. However, one of the easiest articles to find is about trade conflicts where countries utilize protectionism tactics such as tariffs, which is easy to discuss.

Pick a recent article

Ensure your article is up-to-date and explains the most recent events for relevance.

 Summing up

Writing a good IA is an indispensable part of earning your diploma. While picking a good article is a good start to writing your AI, it is still challenging with other requirements, such as picking the right key concept and using it in your introduction, analysis, and evaluation. But with guidance, it is an easy win. Ask your instructor for approval, and go ahead and create a 750-word masterpiece using as many examples as possible from the article.

IB IA Word Count Requirement Checklist

Completing an internal assessment IB is not a piece of cake. It’s the difference between a pass and a fail since it contributes 20-30% of total marks in various subjects. That said, a student has to prepare well. Among the things that students should familiarize themselves with is the IB IA word count requirement for specific subjects. I will save you the trouble in this blog and create an IB IA word count checklist for reference.

IB Math IA word count

Math IA does not have a particular word count. However, you are encouraged to keep your page count between 12- 20 pages. This covers calculations, tables, figures, and sections requiring detailed text like the introduction, background, discussion, conclusion and evaluation. This applies to Math IA HL, Math IA SL and IB Math IA studies.

Tip

If your Math IA exceeds the recommended page count, you can use a few tricks. First, you can reduce your line spacing to 1.5 or single spacing. Second, you can have some tables or data attached as appendices. Lastly, stay brief throughout your exploration.

Sciences

Unlike Math IA, page numbers do not matter in sciences. However, scientific explorations have a word limit of 3000 words. Subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics fall under this word count. On the other hand, some science subjects have unique word count requirements, as outlined below;

  • Environmental Systems and Societies/ Ess ia word count - 1500 to 2250 words
  • Computer Science ia word count - 2000 words
  • Digital Technology ia word count- 3000 words, and maximum pages are between 34-and 36 pages.
  • Sports exercise and health science/ SEHS ia word count- around 3300 words maximum. It should be between 6 and 12 pages(Double spaced).

Individuals and Societies

  • Subjects under this group have diverse word count requirements as listed below;
  • IB History IA word count - 2200 words
  • Global politics ia word count- 2000 words
  • IB psych ia word count (HL/ SL)- 2200 words
  • IB business ia word count (HL and SL)- 1500-1800 words max
  • Economics HL/SL- 750 to 800 words per economic commentary
  • Digital Society HL/SL-  1500 words maximum

Language and Literature Studies

This includes an English HL essay and an Individual Oral presentation. The HL essay should be around 1200 to 1500 words, while the IB IO should be around 300 for the outline.

Arts

A theatre project may take up to 2500 words to complete, while a musical investigation requires 1500 to 2000 words.

Summing up

While our list is not exhaustive, we have provided word count limits for some of the most common disciplines in IB. With such knowledge, planning structure and following the given IB  ia criteria is easy. It gives you a chance to earn easy marks and boost your grade.

ESS IA Word Count Requirements

The environmental system and society IA  takes between 1500 and 2250 words to complete. However, there are no page count limits, allowing students to include tabulated data, results in tables, and images without worry. This eases a student's pressure on not surpassing the IB ESS IA word count. The following are not part of the ESS IA total word count;

  • The title plage
  • Numerical data, equations, calculations, formulas.
  • Headings (must be less than 10 words for this to apply)
  • Captions/ labels (must be less than 5 words for this to apply)
  • Tables with data
  • Acknowledgments
  • Bibliography/ Reference page
  • Citations

Remember, surpassing the ESS IA word count may result in marks deduction in your paper. The teacher may not exceed 2250 words, making you lose marks on meeting some of the criteria. Again, the teacher may find your communication wanting since you cannot articulate your points precisely.

With that in mind, a student might want to practice precisely stating their points. They should also strictly follow the ESS structure and mince their words for each section. Below is a formal ESS IA structure guide;

Introduction

The introduction has the research question, a brief background and a hypothesis. It should be around 200 words.

Planning

This section captures the methodology where you discuss controllable and uncontrollable variables, risk assessment, and ethical issues revolving around your data collection method. It takes around 300 words.

Data analysis

This section takes around 1000 words to complete. You are expected to present your findings, share your analysis, define trends and existing relationships in your data and results, and connect them to your research question. Use graphs or charts in this section.

Discussion

This section takes around 400 words. It is the evaluation part where you share the study's weaknesses, limitations, and strengths. You should also provide an extension for future studies and share a way to modify your study for enhanced results.

Application

This is the last section and takes around 250 words. It seeks to find the relevance of your study and results to your research question. Provide a solution to your study's environmental issues and name weaknesses, strengths, and limitations, just like in the discussion section.

Tips

Ask your teacher for the requirements such as;

  • Format (MLA, APA, Chicago, Havard etc)
  • Number of sources
  • Use of footnotes
  • Number of charts applicable in your ESS IA.
  • Various ESS IA deadlines through out your academic year

Enjoy discounted prices starting from $12 a page. Our IB IA writers are up to the task and will give it the best shot while you concentrate on your exams or other assignments.

HL extension global politics gives students an opportunity to study global politics challenges through a case study lens. While at it, students must pick two issues and use two case studies to explore the challenges. Below is a list of issues that students must adhere to when selecting topics, case studies and two issues;

  • Health
  • Identity
  • Borders
  • Poverty
  • Security
  • Environment

The presentations entail a 10-minute oral video presentation. This further enhances learning in social sciences as students gain skills by relating real-life issues with class concepts. It brings about a broad understanding of global politics. It further enhances research and presentation skills.

Tips

Students must choose two issues and pick case studies relevant to the two issues to continue with the exploration.

Students should prepare a HL Extension Global Politics script that will help them create an oral video for their presentation.

 How to prepare a Global Politics HL Extension

There are three major ways of preparing a global politics HL Extension. One is selecting a case study. This is the most important component as it determines if your presentation will be straight to the point and how you will argue your case.

The second one is preparing a script. While at it, a student must always be aware of the assessment criteria. Remember, it is a 10-minute video presentation. This is a short time, and students should avoid being wordy. They should articulate their main points in precision. Students should also be guided by the criteria while preparing the script. While HL Extension Global Politics does not provide that students must follow a particular format, the below global politics HL extension outline can be followed;

  1. Introduction
  2. Main body (Background, Case study, Causes/ Impacts/Perspectives, Reflection)
  3. Conclusion

We will discuss this further when discussing HL Extension Global Politics structure. This is because HL Extension Global Politics expects students to be creative and engage in the research in a thought-provoking manner.

Lastly, the presentation comes last. Remember to share your points in a 10-minute video presentation. Make connections between your case study, other similar cases, perspectives and the chosen issue.

Tips

·         During research, ensure that you provide data, background and relevant political issues.

·         When preparing the presentation, ensure you are creative with the format. Make sure your script has an introduction, background, sufficient data, key concepts, causes, impacts and perspectives.

How to use Secondary Sources for a Business IA Analysis

Business IA requires that you investigate a business and its transformation. You should make use of IB business IA tools to help you analyze the business. You must also pick a key concept that will make your analysis difficult. You need secondary sources as support documents to help you make sense of your business IA analysis. Below are some tips on how to use secondary sources on your business IA.

Select your business IA tools to guide your secondary sources

Before working on your IA, selecting your business IA tools and key concepts is imperative. Business IA tools are guided by IB levels, namely the standard and higher levels. Some tools are acceptable for Business IA  SL, others apply to both Business IA HL and SL, while others only apply to Business IA HL, which is more advanced. This should act as your guide when choosing your secondary sources. For instance, financial statements will be the most applicable when you have used financial ratio analysis.

Use 3-5 Secondary sources for your Business IA paper

Before starting your business IA analysis, ensure you have explored the internet for the most applicable supporting documents for your business IA. This can include articles, business websites, business reports, financial statements, and news articles, among other sources. The most essential aspect is to ensure your sources cover a wide range of ideas to help your business IA analysis gain more depth.

Ensure your supporting documents are current and within 3 years of your IB  session ( May or November)

This is one of the requirements for successfully completing an IB business IA. Your supporting documents should be within three years to ensure relevance in the current learning settings. It takes care of emerging issues affecting businesses in the modern world. It goes well with IB’s goal of ensuring students can apply what they have learned in real-world situations.

List your supporting documents after the work cited page

You should list down all your supporting documents after the work cited page. Ensure you label them “supporting documents 1, 2, 3,” etc. Do not just cut and paste a few paragraphs, but provide the entire article. Include financial statements, business reports, or newspaper articles. As you list, you should provide working links to the articles, the name of the publisher or author, and a date for the article's publication.

Alternatively, you can choose to create an alternative Word file that lists all your supporting documents. This can apply where a student feels confused about the word IB IA Business word count (1800 Max). Having separate files ensures they can keep track of the word count and check plagiarism or AI scores without including the supporting documents.

Do not forget to cite your supporting documents. You can use footnotes or in-text citations in this process. You can denote the supporting documents as SD1, which stands for supporting document 1, on your in-text citations.

Highlight relevant parts in your supporting document

The last step is highlighting relevant parts of your supporting documents in your Business IA. This ensures instructors can easily spot such parts for verification of information. The highlights can be in any color, including yellow, green, red, or others.

Key Take away

Use business IA tools to guide your analysis and secondary sources

Ensure your supporting sources are up to date for relevance

List your supporting documents and highlight relevant sections.

How to Write an Essay for IB High School Application

An IB high school application is basically a “tell us about your self essay.” This is simple to comprehend and get started. However, with the pressure of impressing examiners and getting your application accepted, you might need some ib application essay help. That said, our post will highlight the most important sections of an application essay and provide an ib application essay example.

IB Application Essay Structure

First, the format of an IB application essay follows the typical essay structure. It has an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. With that in mind, organising your ideas and keeping an examiner interested is easy. Given the short length of this essay, with some schools expecting no more than 500 words while others specify 1-2 pages, it's good to check your word count limits for every section. For instance, 100 words for the intro, 100 for the conclusion, and 300 words for your body paragraphs is an easy-to-achieve breakdown IB application essay structure.

Be creative when starting your application essay. Avoid starting with phrases such as ‘I am Winnie and I live in place x.” Instead, go for alternative ways where you introduce the reason you are applying for an opportunity in a particular school. Give a brief background of why you are fascinated by the course and end by stating why a chance assures a great start to your academic journey.

The body paragraphs allow you to inform examiners of your academic and life experiences. You mention your academic achievements and why they are relevant to your application here. Give an account of your most interesting life experiences that pushed you to apply for IB. It could be the passion to solve particular problems that require mathematics, physics, biology, or any other skills related to IB.

How to choose an IB business analytical tool for IA

A business IA will require students to use at most 4 analytical tools. However, this does not come easy as a student has to determine the most suitable tools based on their chosen topic or case study. This post briefly enlightens students on how to select appropriate IB business analytical tools.

Choose business IA analytical tools based on Higher level (HL) or Standard Level (SL)

As a Business HL or SL student, you should be aware that the syllabus allows the use of business analytical tools based on HL or SL. While those in Higher Level can use any of the 15 tools, those in Standard Level have to stick to a strict list as outlined below.

SL and HL Business Ib analytical tools.

  • BCG.
  • SWOT.
  • STEEPLE.
  • Decision trees.
  • Descriptive statistics.
  • Circular business models.
  • Business plans.
  • Ansoff Matrix.

HL (only) ib business analytical tools

  • Force field analysis
  • Gantt chart
  • Hofstede’s cultural dimensions
  • Porter’s generic strategies
  • Contribution
  • Critical path analysis
  • Simple linear regression (Can be learned from Math)

Sourced from ibbusinessmanagement.com

Use the case study as a guide to pick analytical tools

Students need to understand that analytical tools are classified into three categories: planning tools, decision-making tools and situational tools. Thus, an IB student ought to analyze their case study and relate it to any of the categories to determine the best fit. I will break it down further for you in the next few paragraphs.

First, situational tools help managers determine their current position. Therefore, factors such as strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats come into play to determine the current position of a business. SWOT takes care of both external and internal factors. Other tools like STEEPLE also help scan the external business environment. Lastly, descriptive analysis can be used to determine trends and relationships by analyzing historical data and contrasting it with the current data.

Second, decision-making tools assist managers in making the most convenient decisions by comparing qualitative and quantitative elements. They include BCG, Ansoff Matrix and the decision-making tree. These tools are critical in ensuring the management makes the most rational decision and minimizes risk.

Lastly, planning tools assist managers or businesses in preparing for undertakings such as projects and take care of the implementation process. These tools include Gantt chart, business plans and critical path analysis.

How to choose a good math IA (HL/SL) topic

Getting it right from the start is critical in IB as it helps avoid wasting time on numerous revisions that drain you. With that in mind, it is vital to pick a focused topic that is not considered overly broad or too narrow. Picking a broad topic will have you break a sweat proving your point, while a narrow topic limits you on several fronts, including using recommended math concepts and creating a logical conclusion. This forms the basis of our post as we discuss getting Math IA good topics.

What are your interests?

Picking a topic related to your interest is essential for a good math IA. First, your personal engagement will not sound generic, nor will it be a piece written using AI. Instead, it will resonate with the examiner since you can articulate your points, show genuine interest and indicate your area of proof. Here are a few tips for scoring all the points in a personal engagement;

  • Share your story: Do not worry about being personal. Reflect on your experiences and how they relate to your proof: Indicate your understanding of proof and how you have come a long way through gaining insight. This ensures your personal engagement has a human touch and the reader can relate with it.
  • Share your motivation: What is the inspiration behind your topic and proofs? Can we tie it down to curiosity or the resolve to solve a problem? This shows your genuine interest and enthusiasm for the topic.
  • Share your experiences relevant to the topic and proofs: Your personal experiences can include your struggles in real world events and your breakthrough moments related to the topic. Such details ensure your personal engagement is memorable and engaging to the reader.
  • Be unique: Inspire creativity in your math exploration by choosing fresh perspectives. You can discuss real-world issues and explain how math concepts can help solve existing challenges.

Determine if you can explore the math IA topic?

Remember, every IB assignment requires in-depth research. Therefore, it is wise to consider a topic that is explorable on several fronts. This is what we refer to as scope. You can redefine your scope using different variables, population, timeframe, or other factors. This will guide your research and ensure your paper is rich in research. Ensure your math ia question has sufficient depth and will not limit your exploration.

Apart from whether a math IA question is explorable, there is always the quest to determine whether a topic is common and if tackling it can adversely impact one’s grade. This is all about originality. An IB student can showcase novelty by demonstrating unique insights, methods, or perspectives over the already existing knowledge. Of course, examiners have seen so many topics over the years. However, personal engagement and how one solves complex maths determine if the examiners will stay interested. Therefore, choosing a common topic used over the years is not a bad idea. However, ensure that you add value to it. Seek your teacher’s guidance on math concepts such as golden ratio, statistics, probability, and trigonometry, where we have sine/cosine rules.

Check the feasibility of your maths IA topic

Feasibility involves the practicality and availability of your math IA idea. An IB student can assess the feasibility of their topic by simply determining the resources they have at hand, such as data, skills needed to complete the paper (HL or SL),  and available time. One of the essential tips is to go for under-studied maths, which are topics that present unresolved problems. Such papers will interest your examiner and easily earn you a top grade. Under-studied maths IA ideas are easy to spot by reviewing existing literature and identifying areas requiring further investigation.

Key Takeaway

You can determine your Math IA by sticking to research questions within your area of interest, checking if a proposed research question is easy to explore, and determining the feasibility of your Ib Math IA topic. You can also check for under-studied Math ia topics and start your journey of writing an excellent paper. Alternatively, you can check our easy Math IA topics list or ask us for suggestions on Math IA topics.

What is the acceptable length of a 500-word IB application essay?

The international Baccalaureate program provides a standardized education program that is accepted universally. This provides opportunities for high school students in different countries a room to study. Again, students can make fresh applications or transfer requests from one school to another since the studies are harmonized. This brings us to our main topic: what is the acceptable length of a 500-word IB application essay?

A 500-word IB application essay

Being a seasoned expert on matters to do with IB  essay applications, I would advise students to prepare an essay between 1 and 2 pages. However, it entirely depends on circumstances such as;

  • Spacing
  • Font
  • Margins
  • Footers
  • Headers
  • Specified sentences per paragraph
  • Specified paragraphs
  • Number of characters (without spaces)
  • Number of characters (with spaces)
  • Lines etc.

That said, it implies that your essay instructions are quite imperative in your writing process. Read them to understand the specifics and requirements.

How many paragraphs make up a 500-word IB application essay?

Following a typical essay structure,  you can use 4 paragraphs in your application essay: the introduction, first body paragraph, second body paragraph and conclusion paragraph. Roughly, a paragraph should have 7-8 sentences and more than 100 words. Therefore, 4 paragraphs are enough to meet your 500-word count requirement.

Essential tips that should help you write your IB application essay paragraphs

Master the use of English Language

This applies to those who use English as a second language and have yet to reach proficiency. The IB program has high expectations from students. IB diploma program expects you to develop ideas from abstract concepts, communicate efficiently, create hypotheses and solve them using theoretical models. In sum, getting your application edited by experts for the best results is critical.

Briefly introduce yourself

Given the limited 500-word count, it is crucial to articulate your points precisely. Avoid being generic in your writing and go straight to the point. Avoid the obvious, like stating your name. Take this chance by giving an account of an event or past that aroused your interest in joining the IB program. This will impress a reader and keep them interested. Easy steps to help you bag all marks for an IA IB Economic task

Picking the right IA IB Economic article

Completing an IA IB Economics requires a recent article with a 12-month bracket. The article should adequately cover your economic topic, and in case it incorporates a variety of topics, it's recommended that you highlight relevant parts. We can ease your struggle by providing recent sample articles for you to pick alongside a brief explanation of points to be addressed in your paper.

Creating graphs and diagrams for your IB Economic IA

Guided by the rubric and economic IA requirements, you need graphs and diagrams to meet the criterion and score a full mark. While you can keenly sketch your diagrams by hand and still submit your paper, it is not recommended as it can affect your overall score. From our experience, professional economic graphs that mirror your points and explanations earn you desirable marks. Ensure your graphs are well labeled, including the y and x-axis, and concepts such as MC, price ceiling, MR, demand, and supply curves are well illustrated.

Creating an IB Economic IA coversheet

One of the benefits of consulting or working with us is having free coversheets, formatting, footnotes, and reference pages. While you can get it right on content, having a coversheet and formatting your paper accordingly will improve your chances of scoring higher on your economic IA. We help you get it right on the first attempt using our guide. Do not ignore this part of your paper, as it gives the impression that you are attentive in class.

Proofreading and editing your IB Economic IA paper

Already started with your paper, and it is almost done? This is such a relief if you have exams around the corner. Before submitting your final paper, you can use some tips to ensure I will earn you top marks. While we understand that IB programs allow your instructor to intervene at least once before submitting a final copy, we want to ensure you do it right. Therefore, we provide resources to help you create a killer paper that will require little or no edits after submitting it for the first time by following steps such as;

  1. Ensure your article and key concept align with your area of study, micro, macro or international economic IA.
  2. Check your word count. Between 750 and 800 words is enough to get a top mark in your paper.
  3. Ensure you allocate sufficient words for each section to create a balance.
  4. Proofread for grammar, spelling mistakes, syntax errors, punctuation etc.
  5. Ensure your graphs are well articulated, drawn professionally, explained, and labeled.
  6. Your analysis should be in detail, and events should be explained in your article.
  7. Draw a conclusion that evaluates the events, a key concept and gives a definitive decision.

How to follow the IB economics ia structure/criteria for a better score

Following an IB economic IA structure is a sure way of earning students marks. First, due to the strict word count rule, avoid using quotes and long introductions to ensure you have sufficient room for analysis and evaluation. Ensure you dwell in only one unit, like micro, macro, global, or international trade. For instance, you cannot discuss price elasticity in a micro-unit and have a macro-unit effect like “it affects GDP.” The unit is dependent on whether your assessment is economic IA, HL or SL. Lastly, choose one recent article and one solution.

Economics IB IA  introduction

Wondering how to start your economics IA? An IB economic ia structure starts with an introduction that is around 150 words. Briefly introduce and define your key concept of AI IB economics. Ensure you stick with economic terms other than general terms throughout your IB Economics IA.

IB Economics IA graphs and diagrams

Diagrams are critical sections of an AI IB Economics structure. Economic ia diagrams show the problem and the solution. Remember, diagram titles do not contribute towards the total word count. Therefore, label your diagram, your y and x-axis, your intersections, shaded areas, lines, and areas showing shapes in your diagrams. The economics ia diagram word limit has labels of 5 words and headings that do not surpass 10 words. Lastly, have the exact prices and quantities quoted in your chosen economic ia article. If not possible, use labels such as P1, P2, or Q1, Q2.

Develop an economic ia graph explanation

Most IB students leave their economic ia key concepts unexplained. Take this opportunity to integrate it with the applied theory. Explain your diagram while also applying your key concept. This helps the examiner understand your ideas more.

Create an economic ia analysis

IB student’s wonder what counts as an analysis in an IA commentary. We will take this chance to explain the analysis section of the economics paper. While you have explained most concepts under your diagrams, the analysis section provides a chance to link your applied theory to the article in different aspects or lights. Here, you can also point out the contrast between your theory and the happenings in the article while naming the external factors responsible for the differences. This section should take around 150 words.

Assess/ evaluate your solution to the problem

This section of your economic IA takes around 300 words. Students have an opportunity to offer a solution to the problem and scrutinize it. One of the aspects essential in this section is determining the solution's short- and long-term effects. Substantiating its effect on the stakeholders, explaining its weaknesses and strengths, and having a conclusion.

Key Takeaway

Scoring all the marks in an IB Economics IA is easy provided you follow all the criterias.

Do IB students experience writer’s bumps?

Unlike the GCSE program, which has a lot of handwritten assignments, IB is a bit different as most of the IB writing is typed. However, there are a few times a student may experience a writer’s bump during Mock exams and the main exams, as some of the IB essays are handwritten. Taking handwritten IB notes during a class session can also contribute to a writer’s finger bump. With that in mind, let's unpack the writer’s callus and how students can best avoid it.

What is the writer’s finger bump?

According to Healthline.com, a writer’s callus forms due to accumulated dead skin on the fingers. It forms due to prolonged writing that initiates friction against the skin surface. It is also known as a nerd bump and can be caused by using items such as pencils and pens. Apart from friction from a pen, a nerd bump can also happen on your little finger as your hand rubs against the writing paper.

How to manage and avoid writer’s bump

IB students concerned or alarmed by writing tasks that can cause writer’s finger bump can avoid or manage it by doing the following;

• Articulate your points in precision during IB Mock or Main examinations. Being straight to the point ensures you make a little effort in writing. Again, your examiner will enjoy reading your IB essay as it is not wordy. This will probably earn you more marks.

• Use alternative writing utensils. Make use of pencils or pens with soft grip, and if possible, use digital tools like typing your IB assignment.

• Practice a different writing technique. Adjust your grip and how you hold a pen or pencil. Alternatively, get a different hand posture or position. These reduce the pressure, friction, and rubbing against your skin surface, significantly minimizing the development of the writer’s callus. Lastly, when adjusting posture, ensure your handwriting is legible, as this may earn you lower marks in IB.

• Learn to break down the writing process into phases to accommodate short breaks. You can use this time to stretch your hand, enhance circulation, relax your muscles and reflect on your writing.

• Practice skin care routines. Apply products such as lotion on your hands to ease the impact of friction on your skin. Also, use a pumice stone or other recommended products to exfoliate dead skin cells. Be gentle during this process.

• Consult a professional if the problem persists.

Key Take Away

While the issue of nerd bumps is less likely to happen for IB students, the above tips can serve whenever one is engaged in handwritten activities such as IB mock exams, main exams, IB essays or taking notes.
