ESS IA Word Count Requirements

The environmental system and society IA  takes between 1500 and 2250 words to complete. However, there are no page count limits, allowing students to include tabulated data, results in tables, and images without worry. This eases a student's pressure on not surpassing the IB ESS IA word count. The following are not part of the ESS IA total word count;

• The title plage
• Numerical data, equations, calculations, formulas.
• Headings (must be less than 10 words for this to apply)
• Captions/ labels (must be less than 5 words for this to apply)
• Tables with data
• Acknowledgments
• Bibliography/ Reference page
• Citations

Remember, surpassing the ESS IA word count may result in marks deduction in your paper. The teacher may not exceed 2250 words, making you lose marks on meeting some of the criteria. Again, the teacher may find your communication wanting since you cannot articulate your points precisely.

With that in mind, a student might want to practice precisely stating their points. They should also strictly follow the ESS structure and mince their words for each section. Below is a formal ESS IA structure guide;

Introduction

The introduction has the research question, a brief background and a hypothesis. It should be around 200 words.

Planning

This section captures the methodology where you discuss controllable and uncontrollable variables, risk assessment, and ethical issues revolving around your data collection method. It takes around 300 words.

Data analysis

This section takes around 1000 words to complete. You are expected to present your findings, share your analysis, define trends and existing relationships in your data and results, and connect them to your research question. Use graphs or charts in this section.

Discussion

This section takes around 400 words. It is the evaluation part where you share the study's weaknesses, limitations, and strengths. You should also provide an extension for future studies and share a way to modify your study for enhanced results.

Application

This is the last section and takes around 250 words. It seeks to find the relevance of your study and results to your research question. Provide a solution to your study's environmental issues and name weaknesses, strengths, and limitations, just like in the discussion section.
